TUE 5/3 7-11:30pm – Alpha Rhythm Kings ~ Woodchopper’s Ball Grand Re-opening ~ Verdi Club. Righteously the hottest and swingingest professional swing jazz band in California, and other parts as far as the foot can dance. Robert Dehlinger was the trumpet for the venerable Stompy Jones band before gathering his own smokin’ stellar group. They feed, and feed on, dancers. Greatest swing band in the universe? (Not so nappy suited Rob once showed us the hole in the sole of his shoe, indicative of how needy musicians feel tips.)

SAT 5/7 8:30pm – – Van Goat ~ Ivy Room 860 San Pablo Ave, Albany, CA “Back in the ’30s and ’40s, swing was a high-energy dance music that people would dance to ’til they passed out. These days, if a band starts up with the clarinets and the ride cymbals, you’ll probably start picturing your great grandpa doing the jitterbug. Oakland’s Van Goat breathes a healthy dose of punk rock into swing by stripping it down, raw and so energetic that you’ll want to upstage your granddaddy on the dance floor.” – Good Times Santa Cruz

SAT 5/7 1-4pm – Miracle Mule ~ Brewster’s Petaluma. If Ed Sullivan was still around these guys would be more famous. As it is, they are only moderate celebrities, and parents and stuff. But they are a real kick in the rants. Swampy Tonk they say, from way uptown.
WED 5/11 7:30-10pm – Return of the Ray Simpson Big Band ~ Corte Madera Community Center. 498 Tamalpais Drive. The 17-piece Ray Simpson Band plays the music of the 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s- from swing to jazz. Dances begin at 7:30pm. For anyone unfamiliar with the venue, it has a very large 2000sf ‘glazed’ cement floor that is dance shoe friendly, is usually set up with round tables seating 8 or so, and has a parking lot to the right rear of the building, plus the bank lot and the street. In the past, a modest refreshment bar of veggies and dips was included / well, it was way modest, so feel free to try out your snacks on us. Even bag some bubbly. Admission is $10 at the door.
FRI 5/13 5-8pm – Dorian Mode ~ Dance Palace, 503 B Street, Point Reyes Station. 50th Anniversary Celebration. Horse up the buggy, tie your sun hat on, and chill. We’ll have a lovely little drive through the country and meander past town around the corner to an unassuming schoolhouse looking building. You walk in past the kid art, sniff the cookie table, glance around at the dancers and wave at Dorian but she has her hands full of strings so you glance around again at aha, someone grabs your hand and, that’s all I remember…
