  • Where To Dance in the North Bay – November 13 – 21, 2021

    SAT 11/13 7-10pm – Big Easy. 128 American Alley, uptown in downtown Petaluma. Dorian Bartley on vocals/bass, Bob Johns on piano, zuperstar David Scott on saxophone/flute/vocals, and Tony Blake on drums. They serve up the Great American Songbook as it dishes up vintage jazz, swinging R&B and soulful ballads, from the sassy sounds of 1920s speakeasies and 1930s big-band swing to 1940s jump blues and the rollicking R&B of Ruth Brown. Reservations: Click here to RESERVE.  Cover: $10 Show vac proof. Inside. 

    SUN 11/14 2–5pm – Lonestar Retrobates at Presidio Yacht Club, Travis Marina Bar. They’ll kick off the dust at 2 and delve right into a blend of sax, pedal steel,  trumpet, fiddle, guitar, piano that meshes everything from cajun and honky tonk to big ballroom sounds into something that makes your feet bounce all over the floor like squishy heartbeats. There, in the romantic ocean mist under the Golden Gate Bridge, there’s dancers waiting. Inside. $10.  

    SUN 11/14  6-10pm – Doc Kraft Band ~ Sausalito Cruising Club  Doc can dance, which is why he loves playing a dancey mix of music for dancers. Inside. SCC is a private club. $10 cover.

    MON 11/15  7-10pm – Blue Monday Jam  – Sausalito Cruising Club – Craig Caffall now herds the  boatload of musical friends and happy hippies that play The Stuff.  Always rockin varietal danceable fun, and on that exotic tilted teak floor!  A private club. You’ll have to get a member to guest you in (or me if I’m free and going that night).  (Please donate to hungry musicians, okay?  Strings are expensive.     SATURDAY 11/20 – Hot Baked Goods ~ Verdi Club Dinner Dance. 2424 Mariposa St, SF. Vintage jazz for dancing and everything else.    This is the magic castle, the fave hot spot and lofty aspiration of any dancer, and those that barely touch the floor and transpose to Nirvana. Quiet during the pandemic, life awakes with their special annual dinner dance. So you missed the prom?! Jump back.     FRI 11/5  8-11pm – Eldon Brown Band ~ at the all new Mac’s. This band swings like they invented it. Original blues oriented with some boogie woogie/swing. Great singing and sax by Eldon and a killer repertoire that keeps us enthralled and dancing. Inside. 

     
    FRI 11/5  5-8pm – Awesome Hotcakes ~ Willian Tell House. Tomales in North Marin is all charm and beauty.  Established in 1877, the William Tell House is the oldest saloon in Marin County, on scenic Highway1. The hills are green!  Outside under a huge translucent tent, with heaters, if needed. Warm vibes. Spike Sikes wields a giant saxophone!  Brass & Soul & A Lot Mo…   Outdoors.

    SAT 10/30 – 1-4pm – Dorian Mode Tomales Town Hall. Such a beautiful escape, a dancers daydream as you cruise the greening northern Marin. Earworms echoing Dorian in your ears, your toes wiggling on the douglas fir floor. This historic Town Hall sits at the center of Tomales looking out on the rolling hills of West Marin County, located on a rural stretch of coastal Highway One. The main hall features Douglas Fir floors, a stage, a bar and lots of natural light. Beer, wine and pizza available for $5 each. Support the project to preserve this wonderful place. Celebrate Halloween and enjoy the afternoon with live music and dancing. Costumes at your pleasure. Inside cozy charm.

  • Where To Dance in the North Bay – October 21-27, 2021

    THU 10/21 King Street Giants  Pint Size Lounge 1615 4th St San Rafael. 6-9pm. On the street. A few of us were danced out and passing by at the close of the evening, when we heart this jazzy clarinet, fiery finger style guitar, and Whoa!, there was a tuba fella dancing and playing on top of a bar stool. Really! Yep, I gotta have more of this! Research showed them part of a 7 piece young jazz band from up Sonoma way. Videos were astonishingly cool, sounds like glory, swing nut food.  So I dunno how big the band will be, but you’ll remember them the rest of your days from back when your feet were young. I did. Go. 
     
     
    FRI 10/22 – Mitch Woods Club 88, and that wild boogie piano.  At the new Mac’s at 19 Broadway, Fairfax. Will need new piano strings soon, tip big. Wood floor. Easy, you’ll dance your bloomers off.  Inside, in the reborn den.

With a unique strong soulful sound,  GG has earned her reputation as a riveting performer with a distinct, expressive guitar style and an emotionally charged voice. Great singing and sax by Eldon and a killer repertoire that keeps us enthralled and dancing. Parking lot dancing / Outside.  
     
    • SAT 10/16 • 7-10pm – Audrey’s Big Boss Swing Band ~ Mac’sat beautifully upgraded 19 Broadway, Fairfax. Audrey Moira Shimkas, well known as a jazz singer, woke one morning wanting more. More of that swing excitement.  Knowing everyone in the biz, she called pro pianist Greg Sankovich, sax great Tony Malfatti, and drummer Gerry Kennett, and said “get over here”. Now they are ready. So is Mac’s. Ya’ll come.  All the inside comforts. 
     
    • SUN 10/17 • 1-3pm – Dale Alstrom Jazz Society ~ at PYC Presidio Yacht Club (Travis Marina Bar), under the north end of the Golden Gate Bridge.  
     
    • SUN10/17 • 4:30-6:30pm – The Stardusters Orchestra. The Marin-based 16-piece brass band plays swing and other dance music from the 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s. grab your ballroom sneakers and head on down to the Mill Valley Downtown Plaza, at 87 Throckmorton Avenue, to enjoy an outdoor performance by The Stardusters.  Ballroom style Waltzes, Tango, Foxtrot, WC and a few EC Swings. Free.
     
    • SUN 10/17 •  starts at 7:30pm  – Terry Hanck band ~ The Back Room ~ After 10 years with the great Elvin Bishop, he has led his own band now for 30 years, and his reputation among musicians and blues aficionados is solid gold.
     
    • TUE 10/19 • 7:30-9:30pm  – The Stardusters Orchestra is now under the direction of Mike Wray … and he has somehow improved upon their musical reputation established under their late, great director, Joe Agro. The Mill Valley Community CenterCascade  Ballroom“ is still the largest dance floor in the North Bay with good lighting, lots of table seating, ample parking. The admission price remains at $15 per person which includes their orchestral arrangements specifically designed for dancers, alternative rhythms on CD during band break, and light refreshments courtesy of MVCC. This month Noah Griffin will be serenading us in the traditions of Sinatra, Martin and Bennett.     • FRI 10/8 • 6-9pm  Awesome Hotcakes ~ Reel & Brand, Sonoma. Spike Sikes wields a giant saxophone! Brass & Soul & A Lot Mo. Great sound, energy, and swing dancey tunes. Grand outdoor patio, or indoor oak floor. The band may be inside or outside. If inside, you can dance in on the 1912 oak floor or out on the woodish near patio. If outside, on the woodish or the harder concrete, and still love it. 

     
    • FRI 10/8 • 5:30-8pm  Dorian Mode ~ William Tell House. Tomales in North Marin is all charm and beauty. Established in 1877, the William Tell House is the oldest saloon in Marin County, on scenic Highway 1.  Dorian Mode is swing rhythmic all Vintage Jazz and R&B, and of course Dorian’s singing keeps you company.  Outside under a huge translucent tent, with heaters, if needed.     • SAT 10/9 • 7-10pm  Lady D and the Tramps ~ Mac’s at 19 Broadway, Fairfax. This place is a beautifully upgraded resurrection of 19 Broadway. And Lady D fits right and swings it so right, too. A strong clear voice, backed by a pro jazz band, and is happiest when folks are dancing. We’re doing it again! Inside comforts. 
     
    • SUN 10/10 • 2:30-6pm  The Hot Clams ~ SCC ~ The Hot Clams, certainly tastier than the name implies, play outside on the dock in the sunny sea breeze.  A wide variety of sultry, swinging dance music and good feeling vibes. Gavin blues the clarinet, Davey swings the hollow body ax. It’s all good. Outside.   Must be a member, or a friend of the band to get on the list. $10 cover.
